AEW announcer Tony Schiavone has spilled the beans about almost re-joining WWE shortly before he decided to go work for Tony Khan
On the most recent edition of AEW’s Unrestricted podcast, Schiavone detailed the events leading up to him accepting Khan’s job offer, and admitted that if it wasn’t for his wife threatening divorce, he may have returned to WWE.
It was Bruce Prichard who reached out to Schiavone regarding a position with WWE.
“Bruce told me at the beginning of 2019. He said, ‘I’m going to go back and work for Vince’, and this was January 2019,” Tony recalled. “And he said, ‘if you give me like a few months, I will contact you because I think you can come and work here.'”
The former WCW commentator continued to spill the beans, and spoke about the back and forth that transpired between him and WWE:
“He did contact me on a Sunday in the summertime of that year, and he said, ‘Vince wants you to come back and work for us.’ And I said, ‘Great, what are we talking about?’ He said, ‘We still don’t know yet, but we know we’d like for you to be a producer because we know you like to produce and you like to work behind the scenes. We’ll be back in touch. I said, ‘got it.’ You get an offer like that, and you’re thinking, ‘Man, things may be on the way up.'”
Schiavone said he informed his friend and podcast colleague Conrad Thompson of WWE’s offer and received a text message form Cody Rhodes a few minutes later. Cody told Schiavone that he wanted him to come to AEW, and a call between Tonys Khan and Schiavone was set up.
“I knew immediately I wanted to work there (AEW),” Schiavone said. “And I also had a wife of mine, we’ve been married now for 39 years, and she told me ‘You take a job back with WWE, I’m going to divorce your ass.'”
The rest is history!
As we reported, Schiavone officially joined AEW in August of 2019 and eventually reunited with Jim Ross on commentary.
