Sami Zayn Vacates Intercontinental Title, Tournament to Determine New Champion to Occur On SmackDown

sami zayn intercontinental title vacated tournament smackdown

Sami Zayn has vacated the Intercontinental title and a new champion will be determined in a tournament starting this week on SmackDown.

The Intercontinental title news was was first reported during tonight’s episode of WWE Backstage on FS1. The brackets for the tournament have yet to be revealed, but the tournament will begin Friday night on FOX.

Zayn won the Intercontinental Championship in March at Elimination Chamber in a 3-on-1 handicap match. He then defended the title successfully at WrestleMania 36 against Daniel Bryan, but has not been on WWE TV since.

The only reason given for his absence from television is that Sami is “unable to compete.”

  1. That’s good. He is a mediocre talent anyway. No ring presence and definitely not a fan favorite. He hasn’t deserved the pushes he has gotten.

  2. And yet Brock Lesnar was able to hijack the title without making appearances off and on for almost a decade.

Idiot fans have pushed out talent like Zayn. Too many fans are star f’ers……like Vince McMahon. Would rather see douches with no wrestling ability because “I saw this guy on UFC” before. Dopes.

He sucks they needed to get rid of him along with corbin cesario and that other idiot that comes out with them can’t stand any of them

  6. Is it because of the belt? That new design keeps making him nauseous? God that belt is horrible.

  7. He was so much better in NXT , I actually liked him , he has talent but the wwe isn’t giving him the opportunity to showcase his talent . But in the role he’s in right now he may as well go away . I hate to see the wwe under utilize good talent like they have done with AJ Styles. I’ve watched AJ since heartland wrestling and always knew he was going to go far in this business ; I thought the same of Sami Zayn but we’re won’t let him . …. Vince sucks.

  8. Francisco, are you fucking retarded? Your posts sound like a 9 year old.

  9. Listen, Sami is incredible, but main roster limits in ring work to reduce injury with a constant work schedule. This means good or not, you only get showcased if you have crossover appeal, or you’re over, or you can talk. Sami can talk. Yes, the new IC belt looks horrid, but Miz needs it.

Back in the El Generico era, the world saw what Sami could do. Poor booking and too many injuries. Will be good to see a tournament again.
