The WWE Universe was left in confusion after Sunday's Hell in a Cell match for the Universal title ended due to referee stoppage ... and now the ref has explained his decision. 

Rod Zapata attempted to provide some clarity to his ruling on Wednesday by issuing a written statement to WWE's new show "The Bump."

"With Bray motionless, and Seth clearly doing whatever it was going to take to win that match … I had to think of the competitor’s safety and at that moment, I did what I thought was best," Zapata's statement read.

In case you missed it, the finish to Sunday's Hell in a Cell match between Seth Rollins and "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt was met with an extremely negative reaction from fans in attendance. A large portion of the audience could be hear chanting things like "refund," "bullsh*t," and "AEW."
