They might be broken up, but John Cena says he's still hoping his relationship with Nikki Bella will get worked out ... because he wants to be the father of her children.

During the nearly 6-minute explanation of the high-profile split while guest hosting NBC's TODAY show, the 16-time champ got emotional at times saying he "hurts so much.”

“It’s been incredibly reflective -- which is amazing -- but it’s very difficult. I had my heart broken out of nowhere -- or for me, it was out of nowhere,” Cena explained.

Much of the speculation regarding the breakup has centered around whether Cena would have kids with Bella, but he told Kathie Lee and Hoda Kotb his opinion changed over time. “I love her. I want to be with her. I want to make her my wife. I want to be the father of her children."

Cena also shot down any rumors that he’s living the good life without Bella by his side.

“Everyone’s thinking ‘John Cena is enjoying the single life.’ No,” Cena sternly stated. “I was supposed to be married and have a honeymoon over these two weeks. It was the first time in 15 years I’ve taken a vacation. I am in my house alone surrounded by these emotionally strong memories.”

Cena says he gets out of the house for three hours each night for social interaction. That’s led to some awkward selfies with fans where Cena is sporting a breakup goatee.

Cena says the two still talk, but he describes the interaction as “weird.” He closed out the segment on the breakup looking into the camera and delivering a message directly to Nikki.

“I’m grateful for being able to stand by your side for six years,” Cena said.
