Jimmy Snuka has been arrested and indicted on murder charges ... according to the Lehigh County District Attorney -- all stemming from an incident that took place over 30 years ago.

The incident happened in May 1983 -- when Snuka allegedly returned to his motel room after a WWF show to find his girlfriend Nancy Argentino gasping for air and oozing yellow fluid from her mouth and nose.

The case was re-opened in 2013 after the Morning Call published a report which raised question about Argentino's death ... including an autopsy report that labeled the case as a homicide.

Argentino was pronounced dead the day after Snuka found her ... and an autopsy determined possible signs of "mate abuse" -- due to the traumatic brain injuries she had, as well as more than two dozen cuts and bruises on her head, ear, chin, arms, hands, back, buttocks, legs and feet.

Charges for third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter have been filed against Snuka.

Superfly was released hours later on bond ... because authorities don't believe he's a flight risk -- plus, they don't wanna burden tax payers with the cost of his health problems.
