WWE Issues Statement on Daniel Bryan/John Cena Reportedly Refusing Crown Jewel Appearances

daniel bryan john cena crown jewel wwe statement

Daniel Bryan and John Cena are reportedly refusing to appear at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia and WWE has now (kinda-sorta) issued a statement on the matter.

Barstool SportsRobbie Fox first dropped the news on Twitter this week saying the two wrestlers informed management that they will not be working the event.

So far we’ve confirmed with sources that Daniel did indeed tell management he will not work the event due to the Saudi government’s reported involvement in the death of Jamal Khashoggi. No confirmation on the Cena side of things, including from one of his representatives, but Robbie Fox says the wrestler/actor will not be on the show either.

A rep for WWE replied to our request for comment on the matter saying: “As always, we maintain an open line of communication with our performers and will address each situation accordingly.”

We tried finding out if this means Daniel will not be required to work the event, but couldn’t get verification from WWE.

As we previously reported, WWE announced on Thursday that the event will continue on as planned. As of this writing, Daniel is still being advertised in a match against AJ Styles for the WWE Championship and John Cena is still listed as a competitor in the World Cup.

  1. Doesn’t surprise me in the slightest but they’re still going through with the Pay-Per-View. Considering all the other crap they’ve forced Daniel Bryan to deal with during his time in the company it wouldn’t surprise me if they forced him to work the pay-per-view anyway. Cena can get away with it.

if Daniel Bryan and John Cena’s off the show, then they need to do an angle where The Miz ambushes them in the backstage area thus setting up Survivor Series and we may see Cena vs. Miz vs. Bryan vs. Styles in a fatal 4 way.

  3. All I have to say is I hope they are ready for the wwe network subscriptions to diminish after the evolution event. I will cancel after that and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I hope the money that the saudi’s gave you is worth it. I will not be watching Crown Jewel or any pay per views after that.

All US companies are working in Saudi Arabia now just why you want to cancel the show of WWE

      • Because the WWE show will be full of propaganda telling everyone how “modern” the Saudi government is. It’s one thing to sell a Coca-Cola in Saudi Arabia, another to broadcast an infomercial about a repressive regime.

      • Cancel it all , fuck Saudi. Women should be equal , lgbt folk deserve rights .

Killing journalists, for being critical is wrong

And Bin Laden was funded by the Saudi government and the Hijackers where from Saudi Arabia. So by your logic, the show should be canceled.

          • Funny , I didn’t find any evidence of him advocating for those ideas.

Also funny how you dont address the oppression of women and lgbt folk .

And sharia law is wrong too ,but islam is a joke, no pork , sex until marriage and no booze.
Almost like it wants a permanent stream of soldiers.

You’re an idiot. They’d lose a lot of money if they fired Daniel Bryan and Cena.

They are 2 huge money draws in selling merchandise. Both could sit out their 90 days, and show up in either NJPW or ROH. Something WWE doesn’t want.

Go back to blowing Trump and Alex Jones.

    • Freedom of expression , and standing up to a shithole country.

    • Yes, fire your two assets who are bringing in a lot of money and making your company valuable. Totally makes sense. Slow claps. 👏👏👏

    • I’d rather be a snowflake than a mongoloid like you.

They won’t fire Big Money John. He’s the whitemeat babyface that owns the place, carried the brand on his back for a decade while other guys were too old and gassed out, or were too busy going hollywood. also, the event already has a shit ton of main eventers coming out of retirement, so if he bails its no big deal. Same with DB, only people that’ll notice are neckbeard choads eating mom’s mac & cheese.

  5. I could see Cena being given the option not to work because of his status in the company. And Cena can use the excuse that he is filming in China and can’t make the show.

I think WWE will force Daniel Bryan to work the show. He’s not on Cena level. D-Bry will simply bite his tongue on this one.

  6. Funny, but the rumors of this happening were out there at least a week before this story “dropped”.
