Despite President Tony Khan not seeming keen on the idea of intergender wrestling in AEW, the company has announced a mixed tag team match will occur this week on Dark.
According to AEW’s social media, Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford vs. AEW tag champ Kenny Omega and AEW Women’s World Champion Riho will be shown on Tuesday.
While it may be promoted as a “Mixed Tag Team Match,” the bout filmed on Chris Jericho’s Rock-n-Wrestling Rager at Sea reportedly featured plenty of intergender action.
As you’ll recall, Tony Khan told the media after Fyter Fest last year that intergender wrestling likely wouldn’t be featured in his company. “I’ll just be super frank about this, if there was one thing … a bunch of you guys were at All In. [In] the battle royale does anybody remember when Jordynne Grace got hit in the face? That was probably the one thing I didn’t like about All In.”
“I’m really against, you know, domestic abuse. And I’m not saying that it is. It’s a really complex question, I knew it would come up sooner or later,” he additionally noted at the time. “It’s probably not what we’re going to do. And we’re going to focus on a men’s division, singles and tag, and a women’s division, singles and tag, and have those divisions. Could there a mixed division somewhere later? I don’t, I haven’t thought that much about it. Mixed matches are probably not what we’re going to focus on.”
Additional matches scheduled to air on Dark tomorrow include:
- Sonny Kiss and Brandon Cutler vs. Jurassic Express
- Hikaru Shida vs. Mel
- Best Friends vs. Shawn Spears and a mystery partner
AEW Dark premieres at 7pm ET on YouTube.
