Hennig was trained by Verne Gagne and made his wrestling debut in the 60s. He went on to have a legendary career in the business.

For those unaware … “The Axe” is also the father of Mr. Perfect and grandfather of WWE star Curtis Axel, whose last name is a tribute to his family member.

We here at The Sheet wish his family our most sincere condolences.

UPDATED: Curtis Axel confirmed the passing of his grandfather via Twitter. He released a statement thanking fans for their support and adding, “82 years old. 5 kids. 28 grandkids. No one has had a bigger impact on my wrestling career then my Papa Axe.”

“He’s been my biggest supporter since day one,” Axel continued. “Another father when I lost mine. We lost our King of the Jungle today… Never thought I’d see this day.”

“But he’s with my Dad now so everything will be ok. Love you Papa Axe! The Hennig’s have always held our heads up high! We will continue to do so… You rest assured, The Hennig name will live on FOREVER!!!”
