mean gene okerlund dead dies death

WWE has just confirmed legendary announcer “Mean” Gene Okerlund passed away.

“WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Famer Gene Okerlund, the most recognizable interviewer in sports-entertainment history, has passed away at age 76,” the company said in a statement.

No additional information on cause of death has been made available at this time.

Okerlund first came up in the business working for the AWA. In 1984, he made the jump to WWF. Besides doing backstage interviews, Gene also did commentary for All-American Wrestling, Tuesday Night Titans, Wrestling Challenge and Prime Time Wrestling.

The announcer joined WCW in 1994, but ultimately returned home in 2001.

“Mean Gene I love you my brother,” tweeted Hulk Hogan — who was involved in many famous promos with the legendary announcer.

Gene was last seen photographed in November.

We here at The Sheet offer our most heartfelt condolences to the Okerlund family.

Let me tell you somethin’ Mean Gene!!!

    – Hulk Hogan

That was always the greatest part of an interview for WWF back in the 80’s.

Mean Gene Okerlund was hands down the greatest interviewer of all time. He made the talent bigger and was such a charming and talented guy. What was cool, when you look back at Mean Gene’s interviews, they were always tongue in cheek and had a bit of double entendre that as a kid I never understood but now rewatching as an adult, it made sense and was hilarious.

    RIP Mean Gene.

One of the Greats! Another piece of my childhood has gone away, sad way to start 2019. Rip Mean Gene, prayers and well wishes to your family.

Very sad. I know everyone loved his worked and remember him more for his WWF days. But I actually loved his tenure in WCW. Seemed like Gene got more freedom to be loose and funny with his interviews and one liners. Best part of Nitro every week was Mean Gene interviewing Ric Flair. Great memories.

    RIP
