Broken Matt Hardy Files Trademark For His Name

trademark broken matt hardy files impact wrestling

Broken Matt Hardy has taken his first legal step to own the name … because Pro Wrestling Sheet has confirmed that he filed a trademark to officially lock it down.

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the wrestler filed for a trademark last week on “Broken Matt Hardy” for “Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibits and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer.”

As we previously reported, sources close to Matt tell us his Impact deal gave them the ability to profit off of anything already filmed having to do with ANY gimmick he used throughout the course of his contract … but, once that’s over, he retains ownership of his name and characters.

Our Impact Wrestling sources, however, tell us that’s not the case. They claim the current deal specifically states that their company owns all IP creations.

If that’s the case, Impact’s legal team still has time to oppose.

  • Dark Heel

Well you can almost guarantee WWE won’t use it now.

    • South Salem Boxer

Damn, I was hoping to see Broken Matt in the WWE, but Meek-Ma-Han needs to own everything. I wonder if they are leveraging for more money by trying to sell the character to WWE?

      • AZfan

I’m guessing he filed the TM to try to avoid legal issues w/ TNA when the RoH PPV airs.

  • KFC Owens

A creator should be able to profit from their work.

    • Rinse Vusso

90% of creators are on salary (aka, slavery) and therefore do not.

      • KFC Owens

        oh my brother, testify!!

  • Louis

If he is just now filing trademark for his gimmick, then Impact never had any right’s to it either. So, it seems like it was a friendly handshake deal between both Matt and TNA when this gimmick was on their programming.

  • The Network

He filed for the name, not the gimmick. He can call himself broken Matt all he wants but the character is impactwrestling.
