Former ECW and WWE wrestler Balls Mahoney has died at 44 ... this according to his wife, who confirmed the news through his longtime friend Tommy Dreamer.

The sad word of his passing first came to light via a tweet from Jonny Candido, brother of the late Chris Candido, saying, "At a loss for words, love you brother, you'll be missed, rip Balls Mahoney."

ECW legend Tommy Dreamer confirmed the news shortly after ... tweeting, "I am beyond sad to announce my friend ECW Original Balls Mahoney has passed away. I just spoke w/his wife."

Mahoney is most famous for his tag team run in Extreme Championship Wrestling  – teaming with Axl Rotten as the Hardcore Chair Swingin' Freaks. Mahoney went on to wrestle for both WWE and TNA Wrestling, but had been relatively inactive in the ring in recent years.

Sadly, Balls celebrated his 44th birthday just yesterday.
